Many people claim the age of the darkroom is over. The traditional wet lab, silver based photograph has been replaced by the digital camera and desktop printer. The convenience of the modern digital camera is undeniable, but for the consumer the question remains as to the longevity of the image and the print.
My digital photos from 8 years ago look terrible today. The images are low resolution having been captured at 72dpi and are riddled with digital noise. Prints made on ink-jet printers have faded and the colors are far from vivid. Everyone knows a splatter of water completely ruins the print.
Now, if those same images had been captured on film and prints stored in a common photo album they could be enjoyed 75 years from now with little degradation.
The sad story is all too common that a hard drive crashed or was re-formatted and all of those wedding or baby pictures are gone forever. Again, a back-up CD popped into a drive to view gives an error message that the disk is unreadable.
I live in central Florida where the threat of hurricanes, flood and wild fires is a yearly occurrence . When people are evacuated the first possession they grab is their photographs.
I offer a digital copy service to scan at high resolution any image, print, slide, negative or whatever you may have and transfer it to an archival CD.
Second;
I maintain a full time wet darkroom where I can develop and print Black and White photographs from a variety of negative sizes. I can print Black and white prints from color negatives and transparencies.
Third;
I can restore and customize photographs and print them on real photo paper, not ink jet photo paper.
I can edit an original photograph, add or remove objects or people and make a real silver based print from it.
